Blog Spotlight: Peneloping

Er zijn super veel leuke blogs. En leuke blogs verdienen aandacht. Dat is waarom ik elke maand een blog onder de aandacht wil brengen. Ping met haar blog Peneloping mag de spits afbijten.

Waarom ben je gestart met naaien?

Het eerste dat ik ooit gemaakt heb was een roze met blauwe teddy. Ik was toen 6. Toen ik 14 was ben ik terug beginnen naaien. Ik had Lord of the Rings gezien. Ik moest en zou Arwen zijn met Halloween. De kostuums die ik in de winkel vond zagen er nep en goedkoop uit. De enige optie was echt leren naaien.

// Why did you start sewing?

The first thing I ever sewed was a pink and blue calico teddy bear when I was six years old. It was a cute tiny mess. I started sewing for real when I was fourteen. I saw Lord of the Rings and just had to be Arwen for Halloween. Since all of the store-bought ones looked cheap and plastic-y, that meant learning how to sew.

Hoe leerde je naaien?

Mijn moeder leerde het mij op haar prehistorisch singer machine. Dit was met een manuele pedaal. De machine had ze van haar moeder, die naaister was. Het was een lang en frusterende proces. Ik herinner me nog goed toen m’n Oma mijn eerste elektrische naaimachine kocht. Ik vond het vals spelen. Opeens was het zo simpel.

// How did you learn to sew?

My mom taught me on her super ancient non-electric Singer that she inherited from her mom, who was a seamstress. It was pretty similar to learning how to drive stick, and equally as frustrating. I remember when my grandma bought me my first sewing machine and it felt like cheating because it made everything so simple.

Welke tip zou je geven aan beginners?

Koop een lostornhaakje en gebruik het! Ik maak constant fouten. Het is super frustrend om alles los te maken. Maar als je het zo laat, ga je het nooit dragen.  Die scheve zoom is zoveel mooier als ie recht hangt.

// Which tip would like to share with beginners?

Own a seam ripper and don’t be afraid to use it! I make mistakes all the time and it may feel like the most frustrating thing in the world to have to stop and rip out a mistake but it’s nowhere near as bad as finishing a garment and then never wearing it because of a wonky seam you could’ve fixed.

Wat vind je het leukst aan naaien?

Ik vind het heerlijk dat ik mijn eigen kledij kan maken. Kledij die perfect past bij mijn lichaam. Misschien ben ik erg kieskeurig, maar als ik ga shoppen vind ik spullen die perfect zijn op enkele details na. Een vreemd lintje, niet de juiste leuk, het past in m’n taille maar verder niet,… Het is leuk om helemaal te bepalen hoe het kledingstuk eruit gaat zien. Ik vind het heerlijk om nieuwe patroon ontwerpers te ontdekken. Wanneer mijn favoriete een nieuw patroon uitbrengt is het juist Kerstmis.

// What do you like the most about sewing?

I love being able to make clothes I like that fit my exact body shape! Maybe I’m just super picky but often when I go shopping for clothes, most stuff is perfect except for one annoying detail. There’s a trim I don’t like, they’ve made it in a weird color, the waist fits but the leg is too tight, etc. It’s nice being able to make all the decisions. I also love discovering new pattern designers and when my favorite designers release new patterns; it feels like Christmas!

Is er iets dat je minder leuk vind?

Het is erg frustrerend als je dagen en nachten werkt aan een project. En uiteindelijk is het toch maar niets. Of als je een stofje aan de kant legt voor een speciale gelegenheid. Wanneer ie daar verknal je het op een of andere manier. Weg stof.

// What do you dislike about sewing?

Sometimes it can be really frustrating and disheartening when you’ve spent ages working on something and it’s just not working out. Or when you’ve been saving a special fabric for just the right project and then you muck it up somehow.

Heb je vreemde naaigewoontes?

Ik naai op de grond. Mijn 2 handen op het project en op de een of andere manier mijn voet op de pedaal. Ik weet, het is super vreemd. En waarschijnlijk niet goed voor mij rug. Mijn kamer is heel klein. De grond is eenmaal handiger dan alles op mijn bureau’tje proppen. Ooit, ooit heb heb ik een hobbykamer. Liefst eentje met tafel om te knippen en een leuk naaihoekje.

// Do you have any strange sewing habits?

I sew on the floor, with two hands on my project and one foot propped up on the pedal. I know, it’s super weird and probably not great for my back. In my defense, my room is tiny and it’s more comfortable to be able to sprawl out on the ground than to try to cram everything onto my tiny rickety Ikea desk. Someday I’ll have a proper sewing room with cutting tables and a fancy sewing nook.

Wat is je favoriete zelfgemaakte item?

Ik heb er niet over geblogd. Mijn favoriete kledingstuk maakte ik erg lang geleven. Ik woonde toen nog bij mijn ouders. Het is een replica van Elizabeth Swann’s gouden jurk van Pirates of the Caribbean. Ik heb er 6 weken aan gewerkt. Het grootste deel van de tijd heb ik gespendeerd aan alle details met de hand op te naaien.

//Which is your favourite item you’ve ever sewn?

I haven’t actually blogged my absolute favoritest garment because I made it so long ago and it lives at my parents’ house, but it’s a costume replica of Elizabeth Swann’s gold dress from the first Pirates of the Caribbean film. It took me about six weeks to make, and most of that time was spent hand-embroidering the stomacher…

Of mijn rode Hermelien jurk. Ik heb hellemaal geen problemen met beslissingen nemen hoor.
// Or my red Hermione dress. I’m not indecisive at all. 

Wat je favoriete patroon?

Er zijn er zo veel! Simplicity 1873 en Burda 7739 zijn mijn go to patronen voor copycats. Je kan er echt alle kanten mee uit. Ook passen ze mij goed met maar kleine aanpassingen. Ik vind Megan Nielsen’s Darling Ranges en Deer and Doe’s Belladone heerlijk. Voor verkleedkledij/historische kostuums gebruik ik graag Simplicity 4092, Janet Arnold’s historical fashion books, en Butterick’s historiche patroonlijn.

// Which is your favourite pattern?

I have so many! Simplicity 1873 and Burda 7739 are my favorite for copycats since they’re so versatile and fit my body shape well with minor adjustments. I also love Megan Nielsen’s Darling Ranges and Deer and Doe’s Belladone. For more costumey/historical stuff I love Simplicity 4092, Janet Arnold’s historical fashion books, and Butterick’s historical pattern line.

Wat is je lievelings naaigereedschap?

Als een arme student die veel verhuist heb ik niet veel naaispullen. Mijn huidige favoriet is mijn rotary cutter. Ik heb deze net ontdekt. Een patroon uitsnijden met zo’n mes is heerlijk. Ook een magnetisch speldenkussen is heerlijk.

// What is your favourite sewingtool?

As a starving grad student who moves around a lot, I haven’t accumulated that many sewing tools per se. My current favorite would have to be my rotary cutter. I only very recently discovered using rotary cutters to cut out pattern pieces and it blew my mind. I’m really excited to buy a magnetic pincushion though.

Heb jij dé naaitip?

Probeer dingen uit! Je moet geen schrik hebben voor nieuwe technieken of kledingstukken. Verwacht wel dat het de eerste keer niet perfect gaat lukken. Moest je mijn eerste pogingen zien. Je zou op de grond rollen van het lachen. Dat een kledingstuk mislukt wil niet zeggen dat naaien niets voor jou is.

// Do you have the golden sewing tip?

Branch out! Don’t be afraid to try new techniques or types of garments, but do expect your first attempt at something to suck a little. If you guys could see my first attempts at sewing you would fall of your chairs laughing. Making one crappy garment doesn’t mean you’re not cut out for sewing.

Ik heb een blog genaamd Peneloping. Daar post ik allerlei creatieve dingen die ik doe. Meestal is het naaien of breien. De laatste tijd zijn het vooral vintage geïnspireerde projecten. En meestal jurken. Ik vind het een heerlijk uitdaging om dingen die ik zie in de winkel of online na te maken met mijn eigen spullen. Je zal er veel copycats tegen komen. Kom langs, en vergeet vooral niet hallo te zeggen.

// Tell a little about your blog:

I run a little blog called Peneloping where I post all of the crafty stuff I do, usually sewing and knitting-related. Lately a lot of it is vintage-inspired and mostly dresses. I also love the challenge of finding something in a shop or online and trying to recreate it with my own materials so a lot of my copycat projects show up on there too. Pop by and say hi!
